The story behind the legend

Once upon a time...

On December 7, 1941, the course of the twentieth century changed dramatically. On that day, the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack against the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The objective of the operation was to cripple the United States Pacific Fleet and prevent any immediate American response to Japan’s expansion across Southeast Asia. Meticulously planned, the assault involved more than 350 aircraft launched from six Japanese aircraft carriers. The primary targets were the American battleships anchored in the harbor, nearby airfields, and key logistical installations.

The signal “Tora! Tora! Tora!”—“Tiger! Tiger! Tiger!” in Japanese, and an abbreviation of “Totsugeki Raigeki” (“lightning attack”)—was transmitted by Commander Mitsuo Fuchida, confirming that complete surprise had been achieved and that the attack was proceeding successfully.

In less than two hours, the attack destroyed or damaged 20 warships and more than 300 aircraft. More than 2,400 Americans were killed, and nearly 1,200 were wounded. Among the hardest-hit vessels were the battleships USS Arizona and USS Oklahoma.

The following day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt described December 7 as “a date which will live in infamy” and secured a declaration of war against Japan from Congress, bringing the United States into the Second World War.

The attack on Pearl Harbor and the famous signal “Tora! Tora! Tora!” remain enduring symbols of one of the most pivotal moments in modern history.
