The story behind the legend

Once upon a time...

The Thunderbirds are the official aerial demonstration team of the United States Air Force. Established in June 1953, the team currently flies the F-16 Fighting Falcon. Together with the prestigious Patrouille de France, also founded that same year, they are among the world’s oldest military demonstration teams.

The Thunderbirds’ demonstration program is performed by a formation of six aircraft and lasts nearly an hour. They perform before millions of spectators around the world, showcasing the pride, precision, and professionalism that define the United States Air Force. Through air shows and flyovers, they aim to excite, inspire, and promote the spirit of military aviation.

The Thunderbirds were officially activated on June 1, 1953, as the 3600th Air Demonstration Team at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona. Their first aircraft was the F-84G Thunderjet, just as the Patrouille de France initially flew the same type. They later transitioned to the North American F-100C Super Sabre (1956-1963), the Republic F-105B Thunderchief in 1964—for only six demonstrations—the McDonnell F-4E Phantom II (1969-1973), the Northrop T-38 Talon (1974-1982), and finally the F-16 Fighting Falcon, which they have flown since 1983.

In addition to their role as the USAF’s official aerial demonstration team, the Thunderbirds are an integral part of the Air Force’s combat capability. If required, both the personnel and aircraft can be rapidly integrated into an operational fighter unit based at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. Because the aircraft are only minimally modified, they can be made combat-ready in less than 72 hours.

We are delighted and proud to present this official collection, developed in close collaboration with the U.S. Air Force.
