The story behind the legend

Once upon a time...

“Miss Mitchell” is the perfect example of what a dedicated group of volunteers can accomplish. The aircraft was donated to the CAF Minnesota Wing in the 1980s.

The B-25 Mitchell earned its place in World War II history on April 18, 1942, when sixteen of these medium bombers took off from the deck of an aircraft carrier in the Pacific Ocean to strike mainland Japan. Led by Lieutenant Colonel James “Jimmy” Doolittle, the daring raid marked the moment when America began to regain the initiative against Japan.

The B-25J “Miss Mitchell” served with the 310th Bomb Group, 57th Bomb Wing, Twelfth Air Force, in North Africa and Italy, completing more than 130 combat missions. Remarkably, not a single crew member was lost during its entire operational service—an exceptionally rare achievement. Before taking command of the Eighth Air Force in Europe in 1944, the Twelfth Air Force was commanded by Brigadier General Jimmy Doolittle.

Today, Miss Mitchell appears at airshows and special events throughout the United States and Canada.

The CAF Minnesota Wing also operates a Living History Flight Experience, giving you the unique opportunity to fly aboard Miss Mitchell as a crew member.

For every “Miss Mitchell” hoodie sold, Barnstormer donates a portion of the proceeds to the CAF Minnesota Wing to help keep this historic aircraft flying.

By purchasing a Barnstormer USA garment, you are helping preserve our aviation heritage!
