The story behind the legend
Once upon a time...
The P-61A-10 42-5623 “SWEATIN’ WALLY”, flown by Captain Walter A. Storck, is one of the few Black Widows to have served in all three major theaters of operations during the Second World War.
Initially deployed with the 427th Night Fighter Squadron at Payne Airfield, Cairo, Egypt, in August 1944, it carried out night fighter operations over the Mediterranean Sea.
The squadron was then assigned to Pomigliano Airfield, Italy, where it flew several airfield defense missions as well as night intruder operations against enemy bombers.
It was eventually reassigned to the Tenth Air Force and shipped to India to serve in the China–Burma–India (CBI) Theater at the end of 1944.
