The story behind the legend
Once upon a time...
he Laird-Turner Meteor LTR-14 was one of the most famous racing aircraft of the Golden Age of American Air Racing. Designed in 1936 by pilot Roscoe Turner and engineer Howard Barlow, and later extensively refined by renowned aircraft designer Matty Laird, it represented the pinnacle of racing aircraft development in the late 1930s.
Powered by a nearly 1,000-horsepower Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp radial engine, the sleek mid-wing monoplane was built for maximum speed on the closed-course circuits of the National Air Races.
After finishing third in the 1937 Thompson Trophy race, Turner continued refining the aircraft and went on to win the prestigious Thompson Trophy in both 1938 and 1939, becoming the only pilot ever to win the event three times.
Known by several sponsor names throughout its career, including Ring-Free Meteor, PESCO Special, and Miss Champion, the LTR-14 remains one of the most iconic racing aircraft of the 1930s. Today, the sole surviving example is preserved at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
